About Us
Necessity ... mother of
invention. The Technology Career Paths – Hudson Valley
Consortium was certainly born of necessity! We realized
the necessity of a trained technical workforce to the
success of our advanced technology industries and
simultaneously recognized the reduced number of students
enrolled in technology career paths.
Here in the Hudson Valley, advanced technology industries,
Dutchess, Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster Community Colleges,
and economic development corporations, formed this
consortium in order to proactively deal with the growing
shortage. Our goal is to raise awareness of this
interesting (and well-paid) career opportunity for those
having the appropriate technical education. The most
desirable academic credential is the two-year applied
science degree in Electrical (Engineering) Technology that
will land you a job with benefits at a yearly starting
salary of $30,000 to $35,000 or more!!!

In response to the shortage of technicians for high technology industries and
the possibility of a new semiconductor manufacturing plant (chip fab),
four
community colleges,
seventeen manufacturers,
regional and state economic development corporations, and secondary educational
institutions, came together in May 1998 to form a dynamic partnership: Technology Career Paths (TCP) – Hudson Valley Consortium.
The main objective of the consortium is to increase the supply of skilled
engineering technicians. In order to meet this objective, three components were
identified:
 | Curriculum Development
Initiative Directed By:
Dr. Leah Akins
Mission: Develop and implement a comprehensive and
coordinated regional skilled technician program with shared resources and
benefits. |
 | Student Recruitment and Marketing
Initiative Directed By:
Lynne Sheren at OCCC
Mission: Raise awareness and inform students, teachers, parents, counselors and
re-careering adults about exciting local career prospects in engineering
technology. |
 | Funding
Mission: Seek financial support for
consortium projects. |
